antidepressants and chronic pain

The Mayo Clinic website has an excellent article on the use of antidepressants to treat the symptoms of chronic pain for such conditions as diabetes, fibromyalgia, and migraine, even when depression is not a factor. Don't be suprised if your doctor recommends one of these medications for your condition. They are commonly prescribed for treating other conditions in addition to depression.

Antidepressants: Another weapon against chronic pain

The painkilling mechanism of these drugs is still not fully understood. Tricyclic antidepressants may increase neurotransmitters in the spinal cord that reduce pain signals. But they don't work immediately. You may have to take a tricyclic antidepressant for several weeks before it starts reducing your pain.

Hi. I have been reading your blog and I so relate to you and your feelings. While I am functioning, I feel no joy, especially with the holidays coming. I am going through the motions, but not much else. I am on many antidepressants but I am sure they aren't working very well, but I just keep plugging away, knowing that it will get better, if I can just be patient -- looking for the tiniest bit of joy and hope. it does help me so much to shower every day and get outside even for just a few minutes -- I am my own worst company. I just want to support you in any way I can

Thank you for posting. It is extremely comforting and gratifying to me to hear from my readers and to know that I'm not the only one dealing with these struggles.

It is so hard to deal with the expectation that the holidays are all about happiness and joy when you simply don't feel it. I hope you are able to enjoy some aspect of the season, though. Hang in there.
