News: Chronic Migraineurs Lack Vitamin D

I recently reported on research indicating that many people with chronic pain have a Vitamin D deficiency. News coming out of the recent 50th Annual American Headache Society scientific meeting specifically shows this trend applies to people with chronic migraines.

Vitamin D Deficiency and Chronic Migraines

The Vitamin D deficiency may help explain the risk of cardiovascular disease (and other conditions) among migraine patients.

I've been taking a Vitamin D supplement since January and my levels have improved as a result. It can be hard for migraineurs to get Vitamin D naturally. The best way to get it is through exposure to the sun, but if heat and sunlight trigger your migraines (as they do mine), you're probably not getting much exposure. Supplementing can help. I encourage you to discuss this research with your doctors.

It's a dilemma! We also block vitamin D production when we slather on sunscreen to prevent skin cancer! I do try to get a little sun time on my skin each day, but between migraines and fair skin, it's hard to manage it all. Why do our lives have to be so complicated? Thank goodness for supplements, anyway!
