Topamax Linked to Gout, Kidney Stones, Heart Disease

In a small study researchers linked topiramate (brand name Topamax) use with an increase in uric acid. Excessive levels of uric acid can lead to heart disease, gout and kidney stones.

Rising Uric Acid Levels Tied to Migraine Drug

The study's authors recommend careful monitoring of uric acid levels in patients taking
topiramate. Sometimes high levels of uric acid can be reduced by weight loss or avoiding alcohol or certain foods, but for some people it may be necessary to discontinue the medication to prevent the potential complications of high uric acid levels.

If you're taking topiramate, talk to your doctor about this condition. Don't stop taking your medication without discussing your options with your doctor first.
