Update: My Experience with Botox for Migraine Prevention

I received Botox injections for migraine prevention about a week and a half ago.

The procedure went well. Some of the shots hurt a lot more than others, but as soon as the needle was removed, the pain was gone. I probably would have thought it hurt more if I was just doing it for vanity. I haven't had any pain from the injections since.

My mom went with me, but she wasn't allowed to stay in the room. Initially, that made me much more nervous because I really wanted someone in there to hold my hand. Fortunately Dr. C and his nurse were fantastic. He was reassuring and gentle the entire time. They made the process so much easier.

So far I'm not noticing any improvement, but I'm still hopeful. I've already decided to get it again in three months regardless of how it goes this time because I read a study that said maximum benefits are seen within six months. I think it only makes sense to try it again and know for sure.

As for how my forehead muscles feel now, I don't really feel anything until I try to raise my forehead or frown. Then it feels oddly tight, but not at all painful. My forehead does.not.wrinkle. It's kind of awesome!

My insurance company refused to pay for the procedure, so my parents kindly paid for it in full. I hope Botox will be approved by the FDA for migraine prevention soon so insurance companies will stop playing these games with our pain.

Good luck Diana - I hope it makes a difference! How odd to have your forehead not wrinkle - my forehead has been creased so long I don't think I'd recognize myself!

I've not found much information on how much Botox injections cost. If it's not too personal (or rude) a question, please send me an email and let me know a ballpark figure. I'm insuranceless, as you may know, so I always need to know the actual cost of things.

Hope you see some results!

I just left a similar comment on another post (sorry! I'm not a spammer!) but FYI my neurologist was able to get the costs covered by the manufacturer of Botox (Allergan). For people with a medical necessity, the company will help out (your doctor has to contact them). I think she said that the first vial (?) was free and then after that, something like $80. Which isn't bad, if you get any benefit from it. Fortunately, my insurance approved it (after providing a laundry list of failed medications), so I start my injections next week.

I just wanted to let you know that you *can* get help with the costs, if it's justified. This is true with almost every medication nowadays, so if you ever find yourself with something that works (for me, Frova is a godsend) but can't afford it (my co-pay on Frova is $80 for 12 pills, whereas Vicodin is $0.66 for 45 pills), contact the pharma company. I know a few people who've recently been laid off and were concerned about their daily meds and they emailed the company and got some sort of rebate or coupon or free trial certificate.

Hope you're doing better now!
