One week ago today I got occipital nerve blocks the same way I do every few months. Within about 15 minutes of receiving the injections the base of my head was blissfully numb. Unfortunately that numb quality only lasts a few hours. A day or so at the most. And once the numbing from the local anesthetic wore off, I quickly realized not only were the nerve blocks not doing what they usually do to tamp down the pain I experience from occipital neuralgia, the pain seemed worse than I was experiencing before I received the injections.
For me the sensation of occipital neuralgia is a difficult to describe throbbing mixed with an angry burning feeling. The burning was hurting so much last night I could have sworn I'd used some of that capsaicin cream on my head, despite the fact we don't even have any in the house.
I'm experiencing a mix of emotions. Anger, frustration, sadness. I'll admit I've been having a bit of a woe is me pity party the past few days. I know how to deal with disappointment. I've dealt with a lot of it. But it feels like this came out of nowhere and sort of bitch slapped me in the face.
